I Found A House In Paris: What A Stressful Challenge!

Hello everybody, find a low-rent house in Paris is kinda impossible and the bureaucracy doesn't help at all because it's pretty strict. Being an Erasmus it doesn't help as well and let's not even start talking about that I'm Italian. Stressful, demoralizing and exhausting: these words describe at best how it makes you feel looking for a house to rent here in Paris. Below there are some advices...

Ciao a tutti, trovare casa a Parigi è più o meno impossibile e la burocrazia non aiuta per niente considerando che è super rigorosa. Essere un Erasmus si aggiunge alla -già lunga- lista di impedimenti per ottenere una casa e non parliamo del fatto che sono italiana -nazionalità non proprio riconosciuta come il massimo dell'educazione all'estero, sigh-. Stressata, demoralizzata ed estenuata sono le tre parole che meglio descrivono come mi son sentita a cercar casa qui a Parigi e non sono un caso isolato.
Ecco qui di seguito qualche consiglio...

Are you coming to Paris for a long stay -from 6 months up to 2 or 3 years-?

Here there are some stuff you should know about.

1. First Overnight Stay: make sure to have a roof on your head at least for the first 2 weeks. If you have family members or friends who give you the possibility of hosting you don't waver about it -after you'll see the prices up here you'll believe me I'm sure-. If you have nobody known here, you have multiple choices. Subletting a room or a flat for days or weeks, booking a hostel or a hotel -it's cheaper far from the city centre self-evident-, or a temporary lease -click here-.

2. Dossier: it's basic to have one for giving to yourself the possibility to succeed. The dossier is a set of documents' copies that tell who you are, where are you from and who and how guarantees the payment of a rental.

I.D. card and SSN/NI of you, of your parents and possibly of a French warrantor, University certificate of attendance, contract of employment, last 3 pay-sheets and individual income tax return of the person who will pay the rental. In case you have a French warrantor, you'll have to enclose details of his/her bank account.

Remember to bring the dossier always with you at the rendez-vous.

If all this it seems impossible to get together, don't freak out, the best solution for you is the colocation (someone who share accomodation with you).

4. Appointments: for the most part of announcement you need to call the owners but anyway few days before your departure start sending e-mail, whenever is possible, to take appointments. The arrival day buy immediately a French SIM card. The secret is to call every single owner and take tons of RVs.

6bis. If you make it, if have no rental contract be sure of giving your money just when they give you the keys of the flat. In case of rental contract, go to the CAF of your arrondissement to obtain financial facilitations (rental partial refund).

Stai arrivando a Parigi e intendi rimanerci per lungo tempo -da 6 mesi a 2 o 3 anni-?

Ecco qui alcune info utili di cui dovresti essere al corrente.

1. Primi Pernottamenti: assicuratevi di avere un tetto sopra la testa almeno per le prime 2 settimane. Se avete familiari o amici che hanno la possibilità di ospitarvi non esitate -anche perché dopo che avrete visto i prezzi astronomici di vitto e alloggio, vi prenderà una sincope e l'idea di scoccare un posto letto vi sembrerà addirittura allettante- Nel caso in cui non abbiate nessuno da cui andare, ci sono diverse alternative. Subaffittare una stanza o un appartamento a giorni o settimane, prenotare un ostello o un hotel -più ci si allontana dal centro più i prezzi scendono, lapalissiano direi-, oppure una locazione temporanea -clicca qui-.

2. Il Dossier: è assolutamente fondamentale fare un dossier prima di presentarsi agli appuntamenti con i proprietari per darsi molte più possibilità di successo. Il dossier non è nient'altro che un insieme di documenti in copia che raccontano chi siete, da dove venite e chi e come garantisce il pagamento dell'affitto.

C.I. e tessera sanitaria vostra, dei vostri genitori ed eventualmente di un garante francese, attestato dell'università presso la quale studiate -viene consegnato a tutti, Erasmus compresi, all'iscrizione-, contratto di lavoro, ultime 3 buste paga e dichiarazione dei redditi di chi pagherà l'affitto. Nel caso abbiate un garante francese, dovrete allegare anche le sue coordinate bancarie.

Finito di pinzare tutti questi fogli insieme, ricordatevi di portarlo sempre con voi ai rendez-vous in modo tale che se vi piacesse una casa potete dimostrare il vostro interesse lasciando il dossier al proprietario.

Se tutto questo vi sembra impossibile da reperire, non disperate, la soluzione migliore per voi è la colocation (coinquilinaggio con altri studenti o con il proprietario o in famiglia).

4. Appuntamenti: per prendere appuntamento la maggior parte delle volte dovrete chiamare e qualche volta inviare mail. Quindi, dove possibile, mandate mail già qualche giorno prima della vostra partenza -non troppo tempo in anticipo perché è un mercato molto rapido e rischiate di fare dei buchi nell'acqua e perdere tempo-. Il giorno in cui arrivate munitevi al più presto di una scheda SIM francese. Gli annunci vengono pubblicati ogni giorno a tutte le ore quindi il segreto è chiamare, chiamare e chiamare. Riempitevi l'agenda di RVs.

6bis. Se ce la fai, nel caso in cui non si abbia un contratto di location assicurarsi di pagare solo al momento della consegna delle chiavi. Nel caso in cui si firmasse un contratto, rivolgersi immediatamente alla CAF dell'arrondissement di riferimento per ottenere delle agevolazioni economiche (rimborsi parziali) sull'affitto.

How to find the perfect ~~roommate~~ 'coloc' ?

It's all about luck.

A month of vagrancy is definitely too much, much more if I think that I had to change house 4 times.

One Saturday afternoon during the umpteenth appointment to see a 10 meters squared flat with the toilet in common at 550€ per month.

That day I arrived one hour earlier and in front of me there were already 15 people, I didn't have either the time to flinch that after me joined the queue other 20 people.

Not far from me I realized there was a girl speaking in Italian at the phone, I didn't pay much attention until I heard her saying:

<<I will find another desperate like me who is looking for a house, don't you think?>>

When she hung up, she turned toward my way and I said:

<<Hello, I'm Desperate.>>

She burst out laughing and we started talking about what we were doing in Paris and working out ideas for the housing problem.

After a couple of days we found a studio in the 5° arrondissement and after a week we moved into the new flat.

First try of cohabitation was in the 3 days of hotel before moving in our apartment.

Awful hotel:

one of those with the sign that says "Also available by hour", one of those that when you get in the room you hope to have made a mistake, one of those so damp that on the walls there are generations of mold, one of those that you get in the bed with socks, jumpsuit and hoping not even one centimeter of skin touches the blanket, dirty of some unidentified substance.

I may seem squeamish but I'm totally not. I've seen dirty places but this hotel really surprised me. Anyway, that weekend was really good thanks to the Parisian Nuit Blanche

Then, after all, on Monday, October 8 we moved to Rue Daubenton. Home.

Come trovare la/il perfetta/o ~~coinquilina/o~~ 'coloc' ?

E' tutta questione di fortuna.

Un mese di vagabondaggio è lungo, ancor di più se si pensa che ho cambiato 4 volte casa.

Sabato pomeriggio, ennesimo appuntamento collettivo per visionare uno studio di 10 metri quadrati con WC sur parlier -cioè in comune sul pianerottolo- alla modica cifra di 550€/mese. Arrivo sul posto con un'ora di anticipo e davanti a me ci saranno state già 15 persone, neanche il tempo di batter ciglio che dietro di me se ne accodano altre 20.

Poco più in là mi accorgo di una ragazza al telefono che parlava in italiano, non ho prestato molta attenzione finché non ha detto:

<<La troverò un'altra disperata come me che ha bisogno di trovar casa, no?>>.

Stacca il telefono, si gira dalla mia parte ed io:

<<Ciao, io sono Disperata.>>

Scoppia a ridere, iniziamo a chiaccherare del perché e percome ci troviamo a Parigi e come avremmo potuto fare per trovar casa.

Un paio di giorni dopo abbiamo trovato uno studio nel 5° arrondissement e nel giro di una settimana ci siamo trasferite nel nuovo nido.

Le prime prove di convivenza comunque le abbiamo sperimentate nei 3 giorni di hotel che hanno preceduto il traslocco.

Un hotel che era tutto un programma:

uno di quelli con il cartello fuori con scritto "Si prenota anche a ore", uno di quelli che quando entri in camera speri di esserti sbagliata, uno di quelli talmente umidi che sulle pareti ci sono generazioni di muffa, uno di quelli che dentro al letto ci entri con i calzini, la tuta e speri che nessun centimetro di pelle incontri le coperte sporche di una qualche sostanza non ben specificata.

Detta così sembra che io sia una super-schizzinosa ma non è così. Di posti luridi ne ho visti ma questo è riuscito davvero a catturare la mia attenzione. Weekend che comunque è riuscito a risollevarsi grazie alla Nuit Blanche parigina -di cui purtroppo non posso farvi un post apposito (quella sera ho dimenticato la macchina fotografica) ma qualche video recuperato qua e là comparirà nel prossimo VLOG-.

Poi, finalmente, lunedì 8 ottobre ci trasferiamo in Rue Daubenton. Casa.
